Good bit of advice
Monday, July 18th, 2005Shamelessly stolen from Andy, and in the words of the great Baz Luhrmann ;o)
“If i could give you one piece of advice, balance would be it. The long term benefits of balance have been proven by many ultimate players but the following advise has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispence this experience now”
Don’t worry about the rules, or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to throw a disc with no hands. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that you worry about too much, the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Wednesday.
Learn one thing every week that is new to you.
Don’t be reckless with the disc, don’t put up with people who are reckless with theirs
Sprint
Don’t waste your time on fancy throws. sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind, the race is long, and in the end, it’s winning that counts.
Remember the good throws you make, forget the bad ones. If you succeed making a throw, remember how.
Stretch
Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do when you play ultimate, the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 how to play the game, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.
Get plenty of beer.
Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of self help, dispensing it is a way of encouraging you to help yourself, spinning it, and glossing over the bad parts and learning all that is worth learning.
But trust me on the balance.”
